Introduction

Celebration of National Science Day is a nationwide programme initiated by the NCSTC, Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India every year on February 28th in our country, in commemoration of RAMANeffect discovered by Nobel Laureate Sir C.V.Raman, Great Scientist. This discovery was a significant milestone in the field of physics and earned Raman the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.The objective of the Programme is to foster the spirit of Science among Student Community.

It aims at fostering the spirit of scientific temper among various sections of society by formulating activities in various formats based on the focal theme announced by the NCSTC, DST.  NSD celebrations are oriented towards the entire scientific fraternity to re dedicate themselves for the cause and development of science and its applications for the welfare of society and mankind. These celebrations also aim at alleviation of superstitions prevailing in the society by fostering Scientific Temper among public from various sections of society.

National Science Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Indian scientists and inspire the younger generation to take an interest in science and contribute to the advancement of science and technology in the country.

NSD Celebrations shall be used as a platform to inform the students about the importance of Science in National Development and to sensitise them about the role played by Science in the making of Advanced Nations, about the efforts of Govt. of India in the promotion of Science in India and about the facilities being provided to meritorious science students for pursuing higher education in Science.

On this day, various activities such as science exhibitions, seminars, workshops, and competitions are organized by educational institutions, government agencies, and non-profit organizations across the country to popularize science among students and general public. The theme for National Science Day changes every year and is chosen to reflect the current issues and challenges in the field of science.

Methodology

TSCOST acts asa nodal agency and implementing National Science Day (NSD) in association with Universities, National R&D Laboratories, Institutes etc., under the following broad focus areas.

  • Seminars, workshops, conferences, competitions, quiz, face to face meeting with experts, sessions on fun with science, training programs, exhibitions, outreach programs.
  • To promote minor research programmes or to support for innovations in established and emerging technologies or Independent research activity which can lead to growth of knowledge/process in an area
  • To encourage students to consider self-employment as a career option and provide training through Entrepreneurship Development Programs or short-term Research Studentship to encourage them to familiarize with research methodologies & techniques.
  • Studies / surveys leading to identification of S&T interventions for modernization including awareness programs or to evaluate the status and performance of technology in selected sectors/areas.
